About My Daily Mindfulness Founder, Nicola Semple
Hi, I’m Nicola Semple, a mum of two, wife of one and mindfulness advocate.
Mindfulness is something that I have been interested in for a number of years but have struggled to put into practice in my own daily life.
As a Management Consultant working in the City of London and internationally, multi-tasking was my modus operandi. Even when I decided to follow the path of self employment after the birth of my children I struggled to slow down.
I was a master plate spinner and wore my ability to keep ‘all of the balls in the air, all of the time‘ as a badge of honour.
I was an expert at doing. I really wasn’t very good at being!
Mindfulness had been recommended to me by several people but I wasn’t convinced I was the ‘type’ to practice mindfulness.
I imagined that in order to do so I would need to sit cross legged, ideally perched high up on a mountain, wearing organic cotton yoga pants and stopping occasionally to sip on wheatgrass juice.
As I learned more about mindfulness I discovered that I absolutely was the type to practice mindfulness. In fact with my ‘100 tabs always open’ brain I NEEDED to practice mindfulness.
I read the books, downloaded the apps and with the best of intentions set my alarm that little bit earlier in the morning.
But, I had limited success!
The books were great to give me the theory and all of the reasons why I should be practicing mindfulness.
The apps helped to guide me through a daily meditation but my mind would wander all over the place and I was convinced I was getting it wrong (I now know I wasn’t!).
And the early alarm…. Well some days it worked and some days I snuggled back under the cover and hit the snooze button.
Determined to learn more I enrolled in an eight week mindfulness course to get my head round it all (pardon the pun). And I am so glad that I did!
I now have a much better understanding of what mindfulness is (and what it isn’t) and how I can use it to be more aware of my thoughts.
The eight week course whet my appetite to learn more about mindfulness. I am now in the final months of Dorset Mindfulness Centre’s Professional Mindfulness Practitioner training. I am also a member of Google’s ‘Search Inside Yourself: Leadership and Mindfulness’ programme.
Applying the principles of mindfulness to my life has had an incredible impact, I am calmer, more focused and more at ease with myself. I would like to help you do the same too.
